Description

Buzzi, Paolo

1916.

“The Futurist bureaucrat” (Bruno Munari). The Palazzo Monforte in question is in fact the Palazzo Isimbardi in Milan, on Corso Monforte, the seat of the provincial administration, where Paolo Buzzi spent his entire career. The piece describes the simultaneous sounds and movements he could hear from his desk, going so far as to describe the “Telefono Marinetti” (“Marinetti phone”), the sound of the gun of his imaginary suicide on his father's grave (“PACPAAMM! Colpo della rivolta del moi SUICIDIO IMAGINARIO al Cimiterio Monumentale sulla tomba di MOI PADRE”), the noise made by the prefect as she passed under the entrance porch (“FSffffssssffsssffsss passagio della Prefetessa elagante sotto il PORTICO”), etc.

“Like many other parole in libertà, this work presents unrealated sights and sounds simultaneously experienced, ending at the bottom of the page with the sound of dregs of humanity clippity-clopping in their slippers along the corridor” (The Futurist Imagination, p. 89).

This paroliberist composition was published in October 1916, in L'Italia Futurista (I, No 7, 1st October 1916, p. 3), a publication that featured several compositions by the author in 1916 and 1917 (1916, No 4 p. 27, “Pioggia nel pineto antidannunziana”; 1996, No 2 p. 3; “Equazione Futurista di 5° grado”; 1917, No 23 p. 1: “Canzone dei Bersaglieri”).

“Our reference was Paolo Buzzi. He was the Futurist bureaucrat, he was, under the guise of a man like any other, a man driven by a secret and violent Futurist fire. Our true victories were the exhibitions, not the heated discussions. Our true victory was having one of our leaders at the Palazzo Monforte. Paolo Buzzi was the fifth column, the beachhead that allowed us to breach bourgeois mentality and open brains to our new world.” (Bruno Munari, in “Omaggio a Paolo Buzzi, Milano 1958”, p. 31, our translation).

Paolo Buzzi had been one of the first to read the Manifesto of Futurism, shortly after it was written, in December 1908 (G. Lista, Futurismo, La rivolta dell’avanguardia, Milan, Silvana, 1986, p. 70).

A certificate issued by Luce Marinetti will be presented to the buyer.

Buzzi, Paolo

"Like many other parole in libertà, this work presents unrealated sights and sounds simultaneously experienced, ending at the bottom of the page with the sound of dregs of humanity clippity-clopping in their slippers along the corridor" (The Futurist Imagination, p. 89).

"Paolo Buzzi’s composition, Un attimo della mia giornata a Palazzo Monforte, 1916, in which the echo of cannons from the Carso, a revolver shot, the sound of footsteps in the mud and other sounds that Buzzi perceived from his office in Corso Monforte are described onomatopoeically (an approach appreciated by Marinetti)" (Luigi Sansone, “Free verse and words in freedom”, introduction of this sale).
